What is a congregational church?
The Congregational Churches are descendents of the Puritans and Pilgrims who came from England in the 1600s and settled into New England during the colonial era. Over the next centuries these churches moved west as our country grew. Their philosophy was that a church exists because a people make a covenant with God and one another to create a congregation in a community. Decisions are made by congregations—not bishops or kings or governors—and that is what gives rise to their name Congregational.

The Glen Ridge Congregational Church came into being following a meeting in the Glen Ridge train station in 1888 by the original settlers of the town. The present building was erected shortly thereafter. The congregation has always had the feel of a community church versus a denominational church. Our members come from a variety of church backgrounds.
